Jane Austen, the Brontës, Dickens - where do you begin to identify a favourite book? There is no replacement for losing yourself in a book and, for me, reading a novel is the very best form of relaxation - you could even say that a good book keeps me sane!

In the summer of 2003 I read THE GREAT GATSBY, so I have decided to choose this modern classic, which is such a brilliant story of post-war America, as my current favourite. Gatsby is a tragic figure whose dreams and aspirations tell us so much about that time when there was such a preoccupation with style, wealth and status. It is a beautifully crafted story, which is on a par with many other great novels - there is poetry in the writing and there is enchantment, suspense and mystery, and an enormous sadness. I love it.
